PM Modi inaugurates IIM Guwahati & data centre in Assam, boosts Northeast education

To accelerate development in India’s Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the IIM Guwahati campus along with a modern data centre in Assam. The move is seen as a major step toward expanding higher education, strengthening digital governance, and creating local opportunities so that students no longer have to depend on distant metropolitan cities for quality management education.

IIM Guwahati Opens, Boost for Northeast Education

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually dedicated the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati to the nation, marking a major expansion of top-tier higher education in Assam. Backed by a ₹555-crore Union Cabinet approval, the institute will start from a temporary campus while its permanent premises are built. The new IIM is expected to nurture managerial skills, promote entrepreneurship, and boost research in the region, reducing the need for students to migrate to other states for quality management education.

Digital Push: Data Centre to Power Governance and Services

Alongside the academic initiative, the Prime Minister also inaugurated a modern data centre at Amingaon in Kamrup district. Designed to host key government applications, the facility will act as a disaster recovery centre ensuring uninterrupted public services. Officials say the combined focus on education and digital infrastructure highlights a broader strategy — empowering youth opportunities while strengthening administrative efficiency and technology-driven governance across the Northeast.

The simultaneous launch of IIM Guwahati and the data centre reflects a long-term vision that connects education with technology. It is expected to boost entrepreneurship, improve administrative efficiency, and enhance reliable public services, helping integrate the Northeast more strongly into India’s broader growth trajectory.
