IIT Delhi Launches Sports Technology & AI Training with SAI and University of Exeter

IIT Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has announced a specialised training programme focused on sports technology, machine learning and data analytics. The initiative is being organised in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the UK’s University of Exeter. The five-day in-person programme will be conducted at the IIT Delhi campus from 2 to 6 March 2026 and aims to bring modern scientific methods into sports performance analysis and coaching.

Training Designed for Sports Professionals

The programme is specially curated for sports coaches, physiotherapists, fitness professionals, sports scientists and sports-sector entrepreneurs. Its objective is to help participants understand how technology and data-driven analysis can improve athlete performance.

Key areas of learning will include nutrition science, physiology, biomechanics and performance monitoring techniques. Participants will be trained to evaluate training loads, prevent injuries and optimise recovery using scientific tools rather than traditional estimation methods. The course also emphasises real-world application so that professionals can directly apply the knowledge in academies, teams and training centres.

Topics and Hands-On Technical Learning

The training will cover both fundamental and advanced concepts such as sports sensing technology, wearable devices, neural technology, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence and applied data science in sports.Participants will also receive hands-on exposure to motion capture systems, biomechanical modelling, wireless EMG, neuromuscular assessment and VR-based simulation training. These tools are widely used in international sports performance labs to analyse movement efficiency and reduce injury risk.

According to programme coordinator Prof. Biswarup Mukherjee, this is among the first initiatives in India that combines theoretical learning with practical experimentation. Experts from IIT Delhi, the University of Exeter and scientists from SAI will conduct the sessions along with specialists from leading sports academies.

Registration and Industry Impact

Registrations for the programme are currently open through the official IIT Delhi website. Interested candidates can apply online and access detailed guidelines there. The initiative is seen as a step toward integrating technology with sports development in India. With increasing competition at international levels, data-based training methods are becoming essential for improving consistency and performance outcomes.

This programme represents a shift from traditional coaching to scientific sports training in India. By combining engineering, analytics and performance science, it aims to equip professionals with modern tools to enhance athlete performance. Such collaborations between academia and sports institutions could play a key role in strengthening India’s future in global sports competitions.
